Crestwood came into a loaded Rootstown Sectional with 12 wrestlers and exited with seven District Qualifiers. The team finished fourth overall out of sixteen teams behind host Rootstown, defending Sectional Champion Tuslaw and South Range. An impressive semi-final round saw the grapplers go six for six and climb all the way into second place and within striking distance of Rootstown. However, a difficult final round hurt the wrestlers as they went 1-6 overall. Leading the way was Junior state place-winner Brett Szuhay as he won the 106# weight class by fall in the semifinals and an 18-3 technical fall in the finals. He will enter the Garfield Heights District as the favorite with an impressive 39-2 record. Senior Dominic Savoca went 2-1 on the day losing a nail biter in the finals 2-0 to a tough opponent from Rootstown in the final 30 seconds. Junior Josh Ondash had the toughest bracket of the tournament as he came in as the #6 seed. He defeated two ranked opponents to reach the final including an impressive pin in the semifinals over a returning state qualifier. In the finals, Josh was taken down in the last seconds of the match and lost 3-1. Senior Jacob Ober had to do it the old fashion way fighting through the consolation bracket. Jacob lost his first match of the day before winning three consecutive matches to reach the third place match where he lost 9-5 in the final. However, by placing fourth Jacob qualifies for the District Tournament next weekend. Junior Aidan Morgenstern went 2-1 overall and reached the Championship final by defeating a district place-winner in the semifinals 1-0. He finished second at 138#. Senior Dalton Tyrrell wasted little time by pinning his first two opponents in the first period. In the final, Dalton lost to a returning state place-winner. Finally, Junior Devin Oborn qualified as the #6 seed by pinning the #2 and #3 seeds to reach the final. In the final, Devin got within 5-4 but ended up losing in the end. Congratulations to these seven qualifiers as well as Freshman Ethan Strahan who missed qualification by a single match. Ethan finished sixth overall in a crowded 132# weight class. The District Tournament takes place this coming weekend at Garfield Heights. The top four in each weight class qualifies for the State Wrestling Tournament at Ohio State University.
