The Lady Red Devils got hot when it mattered and scored 4 runs in the 6th and added another in the 7th to earn only the 2nd District Championship in school history by beating the CVCA Royals 5-4 Thursday evening. Down 2-0 entering the bottom of the 6th, Senior Camille Gibler started the rally in the 6th with a lead off single. Angie Masiello sacrifice her to second with a bunt but incorporating Crestwoods aggressive base running at just the right time, Gibler rounded second on the play and slid safely into 3rd base. Kelly Hoffman then reached on a fielding error which allowed Camille to score and move the Red Devils to within 1, 2-1. Hoffman reached second when Maci Head worked a walk. Skylar Gregel then drove a high fly to right. With Hoffman tagging up at second and with the right fielder holding the ball, Kelly did her best impression of the Indians Kenny Lofton and scored from second base to knot the score at 2. Momentum stayed with the Devils as Maranda Seither reached first on an infield hit with Maci Head winding up at second. Mikayla Berquist approached the plate and eager to show the fans packed into Firestone Stadium that she is more than a pretty face that pitches for the Red Devils ripped a double to deep left center scoring both Head and the fleet footed Seither, (did I mention that Maranda tripped over second base) giving the Devils a 4-2 lead heading to the top of the 7th. Showing they would not go quietly, the Royals staged a rally of their own scoring 2 runs in the top of the 7th to tie the score at 4 and set up the drama for the bottom half of the frame. Senior Reilly Kline led off the bottom with a perfectly executed slap hit just over the head of the charging first baseman. Kline made it to second on a passed ball and then to third on a base hit by Gibler. The Royals were able to get Masiello to pop up and Hoffman to hit a shallow fly to center to record 2 outs. With 1st base open the Royals intentionally walked Head to load the bases. With the bases loaded, 2 outs, bottom of the 7th with the score tied at 4, Skyar Gregel worked the count to 2-1 before hitting a ground ball to third that the third baseman was unable to cleanly field allowing Kline to score and sending the Lady Red Devils to the Regional Semi-finals with a 5-4 victory. Mikayla Berquist went the distance on the mound striking out 6 and raising her season record to 9-4.
